Veterans Local Government Management Fellowship is designed to be a mutually beneficial program for both the veteran and the local government hosting them. Veterans bring the following skills to the local government: Wealth of knowledge, Leadership Skills, Attention to details, Reliability and Communication Skills. While the veteran receives hands on training, career advice, networking and resume review assistance.
What does it cost the host community?
Cost to the host community in dollar amount is $0. This is made possible as the veteran receives their full pay and benefits from the military while participating in the fellowship as part of the Transition Assistance Program
Commitment to hosting a fellow
While there is no financial cost there is a commitment of guidance, mentorship and time. Some of the activities that the host community can use to enrich the veterans experience during the fellowship are:
- Monthly luncheons and weekly feedback sessions with City Manager, Department Director, or Senior Manager to ask questions, review resumes, and seek career advice
- Sponsors provide a broad range of exposure through project work in various departments
- The Fellow attends a minimum of one City Council or Board meeting per month to observe the interaction between local government staff and the elected body
The sponsor work plan will help the Fellow develop critical experience to help with their transition:
- The Fellow develops and presents to Senior Manager, Executive Staff, City Council, or Board relative to matters relating to their project work
- The Fellow works with staff to monitor and/or develop the budgets for the Local Government
- The Fellow will have the opportunity to work with department staff and partner organizations to coordinate partnership efforts for the community
- Flexible work plans will provide the Fellow access to key departments they would not have a chance to work with otherwise
